Movie theater popcorn holds a special place in our hearts. In fact it has become a staple snack for moviegoers. If you’re planning to watch the latest movies at the cinemas and are wondering how much is a small popcorn at AMC these days, I’ll reveal the information shortly.
But first, a little bit of popcorn history.
The History of Popcorn
The story of popcorn began 8,000 years ago when maize – the ancestor of modern corn – was first cultivated in Central America. Popcorn, with its unique starchy kernels, was among the earliest variations of maize to be discovered.
By the 19th century, popcorn was already making waves in North America and people couldn’t get enough of the fun and excitement of watching corn kernels pop. It didn’t take long before popcorn became a popular snack at fairs and circuses.
But at the time, it didn’t make its debut in the theaters just yet. You see, back then, movie theaters were all about sophistication. Everyone dressed up to the nines and the idea of popcorn ruining their outfit was unimaginable.
Then came the Great Depression and everything changed.
People started looking for affordable entertainment and the humble popcorn which only cost a few cents a bag back then was the perfect treat for movie buffs. Street vendors saw this opportunity and started selling popcorn outside the theaters.
But it wasn’t until World War II that popcorn truly became the star of the show. By 1945, over half of the popcorn consumed in America was eaten at the movies.
Movie theater owners finally realized they could make more money selling popcorn and embraced concessions wholeheartedly.
And so, the marriage between popcorn and the movies was sealed.
Your Popcorn Options at AMC
Did you know that AMC sells the most popcorn out of all the movie theater companies around the world? It’s true. They sell roughly 35 tons of kernels every day, or about 52 million popcorn bags annually.
There are several options if you want to buy popcorn at AMC Theatres. They have traditional popcorn and gourmet popcorn. The former is basically the familiar “Perfectly Popcorn” they have that is always freshly popped, crunchy and buttery. Gourmet popcorn from AMC, on the other hand, lets you choose from either cheddar or salted caramel. Better yet, you can get the Gourmet Duo which features both the cheddar and salted caramel.
Ok we get it – the popcorn bucket at AMC is rich and delicious. But how much is it?
Popcorn Prices at AMC
After checking a handful of AMC locations, we found out that the popcorn prices are not the same across all AMC theatres but the price difference is minimal so it’s not a dealbreaker.
AMC’s traditional popcorn comes in two sizes: regular and large. You can munch on a regular size for $8.99 to $9.49, or go big with a large sized popcorn for $9.99 to $10.49.
Or if you’re feeling a bit fancy, you can treat yourself to gourmet popcorn, available in single servings for $9.49 to $9.99. Or, as mentioned earlier you can go for the Gourmet Popcorn Duo, an 85 oz popcorn feast priced at $11.49 to $11.99.
AMC also has (probably for a limited time only) a Godzilla x Kong Jumbo Popcorn Bucket. This larger-than-life treat is priced at $26.99, but trust us, it’s worth every penny for the ultimate movie night experience.
Popcorn combo options are available as well. You can get a Large Popcorn + Large Drink + Candy combo for $22.99 to $23.97. There’s also the Snack Pack Combo, which features a large popcorn, two large drinks, and two candies, for $35.95 to $37.45. If you have kids with you, there’s the KidsPack which comes with popcorn, fruit snacks, and bottled water for just $8.49.
How to Order Popcorn at AMC Theatre
You can order food and drinks online via AMC’s website or app and then pick up at the Express Pick-Up area near the concessions. Simply enter the location of the cinema you’re going to and place your orders.
Preordering is great because it means you don’t have to wait in line when you arrive at the theater. But of course, if you prefer the traditional way then that’s fine too. As long as it’s not during peak times you should be OK.
For AMC Dine In, you can order via the app and they will deliver your food and beverages to your seat.
